The High-Functioning Woman’s Guide to Emotional Burnout (And What Your Bloods Might Be Missing)

Do you ever feel like if you relaxed for a minute, your life would fall apart?


Like somehow your vigilance is the only thing holding it all together?


You're holding so much.


More than one person should have to carry, and yet you do it with a smile. You juggle your job, your kids, your partner’s needs, ageing parents, the groceries, the schedules, the meal planning, the endless mental load.


And underneath all that, you’re holding together your health, your sanity, your identity.


But if you don’t keep going, something will unravel, and that feels terrifying.


So you push, you perform, solve the problems, try to be “on top of it” and maybe from the outside, you are. People admire your strength. They call you capable or amazing.

But inside, it’s a different story.


You’re tired.

You’re wired.

You can’t sleep properly, or you wake feeling unrefreshed.

You’re bloated after meals.

You’re snapping at your kids or crying in the car.

You don’t feel like you.


But this is the thing: this isn’t “just stress.” This is emotional burnout with a biochemical signature.


What Emotional Burnout Actually Looks Like in High-Functioning Women


Emotional burnout isn’t always collapse. It’s not always crying on the bathroom floor or having a meltdown in the supermarket.


For many women I work with, it looks like this:


  • Getting through the day but feeling numb inside

  • Overthinking everything, especially how you're not good enough

  • Feeling anxious when there’s nothing obviously wrong

  • Needing wine or sugar just to feel a little something

  • Digestive issues that no one can explain

  • A feeling like you’ve lost your spark, but you can’t even name what’s wrong

  • Anxiety symptoms in the body at random times


You might have even had blood tests, and they came back “normal.”

But what no one told you is: normal isn’t optimal (and what's considered normal is too wide a range in a lot of cases.)


What Your Bloods Might Be Missing


Most standard blood panels don't look for mineral imbalances, oxidative stress, nutrient depletion, or subtle inflammatory patterns that underlie emotional burnout.


In my work as a Root Cause Protocol consultant and functional nutritionist, here’s what I often find in women like you:


🔸 Low magnesium → trouble switching off, muscle tension, anxiety

🔸 Copper/iron imbalance → low energy, brain fog, anaemia, histamine issues

🔸 Sodium/potassium imbalance → adrenal stress, dizziness, palpitations

🔸 Hormone imbalance → Heavy periods, PMS, hot flashes

🔸 Microbiome imbalance → Gut issues, low mood, candida

🔸 Dysregulated cortisol or blood sugar → sleep issues, mood swings, weight gain around the middle

🔸 Multiple food sensitivities → constipation/diarrhoea, mood swings, break outs


And beneath all that, a nervous system on high alert: your fight-or-flight switch jammed “on.”


You Can’t Think Your Way Out of Burnout


High-functioning women often try to “mindset” their way through this, but you can’t positive-think your way out of a body that’s depleted. You can’t “just relax” when your nervous system doesn’t feel safe. You can’t meditate your way out of a magnesium deficiency.


I'm usually the first to say that your mindset and emotions can change everything, but at a certain point you need a bit of help. Healing from burnout isn’t about doing more, it’s about doing the right things, in the right order, with the right support.
