How I Went From Heart Palpitations To Heart Connection: A Case Study In The Body-Mind Connection

Last year, I started getting heart palpitations. They were unsettling and scary, and as they worsened, they came with a rushing, jittery feeling in my body, like I couldn’t relax. At night, I’d drift toward sleep only to startle awake, heart racing, body buzzing. This went on for hours. I was exhausted.


I was at my wit’s end. I was scared this was how I was going to have to live from now on, or that something was seriously wrong. I googled obsessively, checked my pulse constantly, and worried about exercising, eating, even moving through my day. I had scans and tests to check the medical underlying causes, but when they came back with nothing, I was left even more confused.


And underneath it all, life at home was heavy. My eldest daughter had turned 18. She had moved her boyfriend into the house, and they were pushing boundaries I couldn’t ignore - smoking, arguing, pulling away from me. I was torn: I wanted to protect her and support her into adulthood, but I also knew I couldn’t continue living like this. My heart was breaking, and my body was showing it.


The Nightly Rituals That Saved Me


In those restless nights, I found myself barefoot on the grass, gazing up at the stars. Sometimes I’d sit on the balcony, hand on heart, breathing through the storm of grief, frustration, and love that flooded me.


I cried. I stretched open instead of collapsing in on myself. I let my emotions move through me instead of locking them inside. I meditated. I whispered the truth of my heart. I nourished my body during the day with movement, hydration, supplements, nervous system practices.


And most importantly, I built a daily practice of putting my hands on my body and listening. Asking: What is my spirit’s true desire here?


The answers came, the next steps became clear. I expressed my needs. I set boundaries. I followed through with consequences when those boundaries were crossed, even when it was hard. Eventually, my daughter and her boyfriend moved out.


It was painful, but it was right.


The Transformation


Slowly, the palpitations stopped. My sleep returned, deeper than ever. My nervous system softened into calm. My emotions felt lighter, clearer. And the most beautiful outcome of all: my daughter grew. She’s happier now, taking responsibility for her life in ways she couldn’t when she lived under my roof. And our bond is as strong as ever.

I didn’t “fix” myself with medical interventions. I healed by reconnecting body, mind, emotions, and spirit. I healed by listening.


The Bigger Truth


What I learned is this: Your body is not broken. Your symptoms are not proof that you’re failing. They are messages. Invitations. Doorways.


As women, we are so conditioned to override them. To keep pushing. To live by the “shoulds.” To be the best mother, wife, housekeeper, employee, business owner, looking good all the while - until we’re so exhausted and disconnected that our bodies have no choice but to shout.

But we are not here to burn out. We are not here to prove ourselves. We are here to experience, to feel, to live fully in these bodies as the souls we are.
